The Beat Behind the Wall by María José Luque Fernández

The walls, blackened by the passage of time and dampness, were a nest of shadows that stirred in the whisper of silence. They seemed to have fallen into a deep coma from which they would never awaken, echoes of memories wandering freely, unrecognizable to me.

Beyond the threshold came a cold, heavy air that clung to my body like invisible hands, preventing me from moving forward with resolve. My steps creaked over the cracked floor like a suppressed lament in my chest, struggling to reach the air in that void that had settled into every corner like a perpetual secret that could not be revealed.

My eyes didn’t know where to rest, seeking refuge in the light of the stained glass as I walked down the endless corridor. In the gloom, the souls of those who had ceased to exist there seemed to emerge. Only a faint heartbeat, a soft whisper, broke through the shadows—it was her, calling my name…

Through the seams of my skin filtered sensations unknown to me, trying to be relegated to the dark side of the moon, where nonsense resides, but nothing is as we wish, and she advanced toward me, slowly…

The half-open door invited me into that chamber, where an unpleasant smell of old iron made me vomit memories, empty cries of hope—a stench that infiltrated my insides, preventing any reaction. A supernatural force seemed to anchor me to that floor, which was opening beneath my feet, crumbling away as if I were being drawn by a gigantic magnet.

Silenced, my vocal cords barely allowed me to glimpse a mirror that did not reflect me—not due to the dust that had accumulated on it, no!
I was no longer myself…

That delay in every movement, that echo that seemed to call me…
Like being inside the house without being inside, how could I find the exit if it was her—yes! The house, the one inside me, whispering nonexistent memories, devouring my being…

A rhythmic, deep heartbeat accompanied me as my soul, I knew, was crossing the threshold, leaving me in this house heavy with solitude.

A hollow laugh of a self that no longer existed echoed in my ears as the darkness closed around me and the echo—the one that called my name, syllable by syllable—faded away.
